In order to maximise a student’s chances of success in the exams, revision has to take place in order to refresh and remind ourselves of the information and skills learned over the GCSE course for each subject.
It is proven that ‘distributed practice’: in other words chunking and spreading out revision: is the best approach. This leads to repetition which helps our memory and the recalling of information. As a school we recommend an approach of ‘a little revision, often’. This means that revision has to start early and be organised in order for student’s full potential to be met. This is often supported by a coherent revision timetable, where revision sessions, breaks and days off, last minute revision, along with the dates of the exams themselves are all clearly planned.

We would like to share some important information regarding the support offered to the Year 11 students following Tuesday’s assembly (PDF below), as well as an outline of the revision and preparation for each subject; designed to maximise individual success.
Firstly, with this article please find a PDF outline of the GCSE revision sessions taking place at lunchtimes and after school (3.30-4.30pm). The programme runs from January through to the May half term. These sessions are to support the revision and preparation that the Year 11 students will be completing at home. Some pupils will be specifically advised to attend certain sessions based on their tracking data and Mock exam results. It is crucial that they attend these, as subject teachers will have specifically highlighted areas to work on and improve, prior to the final exams.

For revision to be successful it also needs to be organised carefully. Attached are two alternative revision timetable templates and instructions to use. Students should plan their revision, managing their time and making sure that all subjects are covered. This plan can include nights off and breaks as well. Students should try to follow it closely and get into the habit of ' a little and often' as an approach.
Finally students sometimes don't always know the best approach for certain subjects when it comes to revision, or they just don't know how to start. Attached is a document called 'How best to revise in...' which is an outline per subject of the 3 or 4 top tips specific to revision in each subject. The best idea is to start with a simple technique like 'read, cover, recall' and see if that works best for you.
