Young Carers

Norfolk County Council defines a Young Carer as:  ‘Children and young people aged under 18 who look after or support a family member or a friend who is disabled, ill or misuses drugs or alcohol. The child or young person may help with practical tasks or emotional support for their disabled or ill person or others in the family household.’

We are proud to be a Young Carer friendly school and hold the Carer Friendly Tick Award.  This award recognises the support we have in place for Young Carers at Sprowston Community Academy and the work we do to raise awareness of their role with both staff and students

What is the Carer Friendly Tick Award?

In School Support

At Sprowston Community Academy we value our Young Carers and feel that it is important to celebrate their caring role and the life skills that they have acquired. We also recognise that our Young Carers may sometimes need some additional support.

The support we offer to Young Carers includes:

  • 1:1s if required
  • Young Carers Ambassador Groups
  • Homework clubs
  • Morning drop in sessions: (8.00am - 8.45am)
  • Referrals for external support, if needed

Our Young Carers are invited to attend Young Carers Ambassadors sessions.  These sessions are an opportunity for students to meet with other Young Carers and activities are planned around the students interests, with a focus on well-being and raising awareness of Young Carers in the school and the wider community.  Some of our activities this term include:

Young Carers Ambassadors

  • Planning activities and assemblies
  • Planning fundraising events
  • Giving Young Carers perspectives to local health services
  • Making Journals
  • Collaborative art project
